Technology Licensing

The University of Hawaii (UH) has a long and successful history of collaborating with industry. The research carried out in laboratories throughout the UH system produces many discoveries that have the potential for commercial development and application by the private sector. UH researchers generate a great number of invention disclosures every year. Resulting UH inventions, which span many fields including agriculture, biology, medicine, engineering & physical sciences, and many other technologies, have commercial value and are available for licensing.

In order to handle the numerous active licenses currently in place, OTTED relies on skilled licensing professionals who work with industry to arrive at approaches to commercializing the University technology that meet the needs of both the University and its industrial partners. OTTED invites you to collaborate with the University of Hawaii and benefit from its rich resources.

Licensing Process

Our licensing process is designed to provide a fair, documented relationship between the University and you, our commercial partners. We strive for a balance: to have incentives to encourage you to invest to commercialize our technology so its benefits reach the public, while providing fair returns to the University for continued research and education. Once you contact us, we will provide information to assist you in your evaluation. Often a simple Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) allows us to provide additional confidential materials. Material Transfer Agreements (MTA) can be constructed to allow authorized use, by a company or another university, of chemical compounds, prototypes, biological materials and software programs within specific limits.

The license agreement formalizes the transfer of IP rights from UH to the licensee. The intellectual property (IP) described in the license typically falls under one or more patents. It may also include know-how, trade-marks, and copyrighted material. Consideration under the license may include fees, royalties, research project funding, equity, etc.

You will find that our agreements and their terms and conditions are similar to most university agreements. Although most of our agreements have simple, standardized components, we are always willing to work with you to provide specific modifications to suit your needs and our relationship.
